This was the home alley for the late John Ryan. John was one of our greatest handballers who played during the late forties, fifties and early sixties. He was equally good at hardball and softball winning All-Irelands at both. In 1957 he became only the 2nd player to win all four senior All-Ireland titles.
John Ryan was indeed a terrific handballer. He would have played matches in all the alleys in the area including the Kilmannon alley which is still in good condition up in Cleariestown near the New Line road. This alley might have a little handball played there still but it has been used for hurling practise moreso in the last 10-15 years.
