Photographed by M.Geoghegan, April 2010
This alley is situated in Castlegar Village on the opposite side
to the parish church on the Tuam Road out of Galway. The Alley is 30
foot wide and 60 foot long to the stone back wall. It crosses an
actual road which links the Tuam Road and the Headford Road. The
alley was in use up to the 1970's when little traffic passed the way
but this road is now a rat run every morning and evening and the alley
contains some flower pots put in place by the local residents.

Dunmore, Co.Galway

Dunmore, Co.Galway

Photographed and information collected in March 2010 by M. Geoghegan.
Two walls survive in the Dunmore ball alley which is no longer in use for handball. There is no exact record of when the alley was built but local historian Hubert Bermingham thinks that, from reports and information he has gathered through the years, the alley was built by the Loftus family who owned a public house on the site sometime in the middle of the 19th century. The front wall, which is in good condition, was built from local cut stone and when the alley was in use there were two side walls and a back wall which Hubert reckons was four to five feet high. Another local man recalls playing handball, football, soccer and football in the alley and he even recalls the odd fight taking place there!

Ower Bridge, Co. Galway

Ower Bridge, Co. Galway

Photographs and information provided by M.Geoghegan in April 2010

The Alley at Ower Bridge is on the banks of the Black River which forms the border between Galway and Mayo. There is debate as to which county the Alley is actually in. The river proper runs on the Galway side of the Alley but there is a mill race on the northern side with a second bridge over the road and some locals reckon this is the border. The Alley is in what was an 19th century mill with the walls part of the original building. The Alley is 30 foot wide but only 51 foot long to a white marking which was the end line when the alley was in use. A local man tells of a time when the alley was the centre of social life in the area with large crowds turning up on a Sunday to play and watch. Use of the Alley waned in the 1980s with the building of five new courts in Headford.

Castlecreevy, Co. Galway

Castlecreevy,Co.Galway
Photographs and information provided by M. Geoghegan, March 2010.
The alley in Castlecreevy has not been use in living memory. Uncle of local man in his late sixties used to talk about the games played there but that would have been at least fifty years ago. Same man told of people from Moycullen crossing River Corrib by boat to play handball in alleys in times gone by.
